James Clear's Article "Motivation is Overvalued" Explored

James Clear- Motivation is Overvalued. Environment Often Matters More.

James Clear, author and blogger, posted an interesting post to his blog. The article explores the importance of motivation versus physical environment. This is an issue that often arises for people when trying to complete tasks. Many people, including myself, have a tendency to blame lack of production on lack of motivation. This article explores that idea that motivation is overvalued, and not they key to production.

Clear uses his post to explain that environment is the invisible hand that shapes human behavior. He compares trying to complete tasks in an improper environment to trying to grow tomatoes in Canadian winter; it simply does not work. Clear says, "if you want to maximize your odds of success, then you need to operate in an environment that accelerates your results rather than hinders them."

Clear makes a very good case for his opinion about proper environment being the key to productive success. When you think about it, it makes sense. Have you ever tried to do homework in your bed? There are so many distractions that can be hindering to productivity; cuddly pets, Netflix, significant others, food in the kitchen, etc. Now imagine trying to complete the same homework in a desk at the library. The chance of distraction decreases dramatically. The article suggests creating an environment that generates a comfortable and natural flow to completing work. If you work productivity into your routine in a way that makes it feel convenient and easy and not forced, it will become easier to go through with that productive task.
